Our Lady of Fatima Church (2319 Johnston Street, Lafayette 70503) will host a celebration in honor of the Canonization of Blessed Junipera Serra. The Serra Club of Lafayette is inviting members and friends to attend this special Mass. Bishop Michael Jarrell will serve as principal celebrant; he will be joined by Fr. Michael Russo (Pastor, Our Lady of Fatima), Fr. Kevin Bordelon (Serra chaplain), and former Serra chaplains. After the Mass, there will be a Holy Hour for vocations and the spiritual renewal of priests to which are all are also invited.
On the same day in Washington, DC, Pope Francis will be officiating at the canonization of Blessed Serra in the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
A native of Spain, Blessed Junipera Serra came to Mexico--then the California missions--and is remembered for his eagerness to share the word of the Lord with those faraway. The Franciscan friar, considered one of the founders of California, established major missions at San Diego, San Carlos Borromeo, San Gabriel, San Francisco, and Santa Clara. He is the patron of Serra Clubs who foster vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.
