The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist (914 St. John Street, Lafayette) will host the celebration of a special Mass in honor of the canonization of St. Teresa of Calcutta, MC. Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel will serve as celebrant, and all are invited to attend.
The canonization of St. Teresa of Calcutta will take place in Rome on September 4, 2016.
During her lifetime, the foundress of the Missionaries of Charity visited Lafayette twice, once in 1986 when her presence prompted the filling of the Cajundome to its 16,000-seat capacity. It was during this visit that Mother Teresa announced that she was assigning four of her sisters to live and work in Lafayette. Her second, less publicized visit was made a year later to visit her sisters, who at first they resided across from the Cathedral but have since moved to a location in the northern part of the city, more convenient to their work among the less fortunate.
