Everyone is invited to the annual Red Mass to be held in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist (914 St. John Street, Lafayette 70501). The "Red Mass" is a historical tradition within the Catholic Church dating back to the Thirteenth Century. The celebrants -- government officials, lawyers and judges-- proceed into a church clothed in red vestments or red garments, signifying the fire of the Holy Spirit's guidance to all who pursue justice in their daily lives as we begin a new year in the legal system.
Bishop Michael Jarrell will celebrate the Red Mass and Bishop Michael Gerard Duca, from the Diocese of Shreveport, LA will serve as guest homilist.
All those involved in the Judicial, Legal, and Law Enforcement systems in Acadiana are particularly encouraged to attend.
