The Creighton Model System is a natural Fertility Awareness Based Method (FABM) which Dr. Thomas Hilgers and his team began developing in the 1970s in response to St. Pope Paul VI’s appeal to healthcarep rofessionals in Humanae Vitae. It is a standardized modification of the Billings Ovulation Method and has meaningful medical applications based on many years of ongoing scientific research. The Creighton Model monitors the fertility and health of the woman through cervical mucus and other observations. This system is a true form of family planning because it can be used either to avoid or achieve pregnancy. When the Creighton Model is used perfectly, it is 99.5 percent effective at avoiding pregnancy. With typical use, the effectiveness to avoid pregnancy is 96.8 percent. Creighton is applicable for all women across their reproductive lives. It can be used successfully by women who have regular or irregular cycles, are breastfeeding, or are premenopausal. It can also be used by women who experience continuous mucus discharge or are anovulatory (do not ovulate). The system is tailor-made to the woman and includes eight one-on-one follow up sessions in the first year of learning the system.
Because of the use of standardization, Creighton has been successful at producing meaningful research. Natural Procreative Technology, or "NaPro", was developed based on the research of the biological markers noted in Creighton charting of women's cycles by Dr. Hilgers and his team. NaProTECHNOLOGY works cooperatively with the woman's body in delivering a type of treatment which directly addresses the underlying problem(s) which cause various symptoms noticed by the patient/client, with the goal of maintaining the procreative ability. Instead of simply suppressing symptoms, it seeks to evaluate and determine the cause of issues and treat the condition without disrupting fertility. NaProTECHNOLOGY is applicable for family planning, targeted hormone evaluation, targeted hormone replacement, identification and treatment of ovarian cysts, infertility, miscarriages, post partum depression, premenstrual syndrome, abnormal bleeding, and other reproductive disorders. This new technology provides new hope to couples experiencing infertility and other gynecologic issues. In couples with infertility, the Creighton Model system, used alone, has a pregnancy success rate of 20-40 percent. The Creighton Model system used in conjunction with NaProTECHNOLOGY has success rates of up to 80 percent in couples experiencing infertility (success rates will vary dependent upon medical conditions).
