Relics of St. Bernadette Soubirous

For the first time in history, the relics of St. Bernadette Soubirous have come from Lourdes, France, to tour the United States. Her relics will be available for veneration at more than 30 churches and shrines across the USA, including the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette. The relics will be on display for the public in the Diocese of Lafayette from July 12th-14th.

     As a young child, Bernadette witnessed apparitions of the Holy Mother, asking for a chapel to be built near her home in Lourdes, France.  Those Marian apparitions became known as “Our Lady of Lourdes.”  The Marian shrine built there now attracts more than five million pilgrims of all denominations each year.
    
     On this US pilgrimage, St. Bernadette’s relics, which include part of her rib, are contained in a large reliquary crafted by master craftsmen of religious artistry at Maison Granda workshop in Spain in 2019.
    
     The Vatican has granted a plenary indulgence for those visiting the relics during the tour. With 34 churches participating throughout the USA, thousands are anticipated to visit the Relics along the USA tour.
