“Our Diocese is very blessed this weekend to have the relics of Saint Padre Pio visiting our Diocese here at our Lady of Fatima parish. As Catholics, we venerate the relics of Saints and martyrs to put us into a human, real proximity with models and examples of those who followed Christ successfully in their lives. We know that as human beings we learn through our senses and so we venerate the relics of the saints to give us a contact with someone who we might imitate in our lives and to ask the Saint, like Saint Padre Pio, to pray, to intercede with God on our behalf now that they are in his presence.”
Words spoken by Bishop Douglas Deshotel, Bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette, during a special Mass to honor St. Padre Pio on Sunday, October 7, 2019. The relics of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, affectionately known to Catholics as Padre Pio, were on display at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lafayette. Veneration of the Relics was held in Knight Hall. The relics of Saint Pio available for public veneration include Saint Pio’s glove, crusts of the wounds, cotton-gauze with his blood stains, a lock of his hair, Saint Pio’s mantle, and his handkerchief soaked with his sweat hours before he died. Each relic is encased in an elegant reliquary. The faithful were allowed close enough to touch the reliquaries holding the saint’s effects.
Saint Padre Pio pray for us!
