Oh happy day! St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Grand Coteau celebrated the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the parish on Sunday, November 3, 2019!
St. Charles Borromeo Parish was established in 1819. It is the third oldest parish in the Diocese of Lafayette, pre-dated only by St. Martin de Tours Church in St. Martinville and St. Landry Church in Opelousas. St. Charles Borromeo Parish was formed some 99 years before the Diocese of Lafayette was created out of what was then the Archdiocese of New Orleans. A special Bicentennial Mass was celebrated this morning, Sunday November 3, 2019. Father Derrick Weingartner was the main celebrant. Fr. Mark Kramer, Fr. Clyde Leblanc, Fr. Michael Wegenka, Fr. Andrew Kirschman, Fr. John Lan Tran, Fr. Charlie Thibodeaux, and Fr. Joe Nasser concelebrated the Mass. Many friends, parishioners and former parishioners attended the special celebration recognizing 200 years of Catholic faith in the community. Congratulations!
