In the Year of Our Lord, 2018, we the Centennial Committee introduce and invite you to celebrate the Jubilee for the Diocese of Lafayette as we mark our Centennial Anniversary.
In these 100 years, Almighty God has been forming us into His People. Of course, Catholicism dates back much earlier in our area as we were first part of the French Diocese of Quebec, then part of the Spanish Diocese of Havana, then part of the American Archdiocese of New Orleans and finally in 1918, Rome decreed the Diocese of Lafayette. Even in 1918, we were a multi-cultural land and that has only increased, but one thing has been constant and that is our Catholic Faith, which has so beautifully brought us together.
Throughout 2018, we as Diocesan People of God will celebrate our growth in faith in many ways striving to recognize our beginnings, our present, and our future with God and with each other. Think of your own personal faith life and how that has grown and developed and even struggled, but then you multiply that by over 100 years and over millions of souls who have walked the land of our Diocese.
WE HAVE A STORY WITH OUR GOD WHICH IS BIGGER
THAN ANY INDIVIDUAL PERSON,
BUT CREATED BY GOD WORKING THROUGH
EACH OF OUR INDIVIDUAL LIVES.
How easy it is to be concerned about our own individual lives and faith and to keep faith private but our 100 Years proclaim boldly that we are a Family of God whom God continues to move, in order to bring salvation upon the world. Many people see Southern Louisiana for our food, music, oil industry and diverse culture, but God working through our Catholic Faith is our most dynamic Southern Louisiana Virtue of all.
Pope Francis has decreed this a Year of Jubilee for all the people of the Diocese of Lafayette and has granted an indulgence. May the Centennial Year of 2018 be a true blessing for all of us as we invite you to participate fully in this Year of Jubilee.
Sincerely,
Diocese of Lafayette Centennial Committee
